Insights from Ms Liew Wai Yee: The intriguing world of biology

Interview by: Lehashini A/P Ramanesh

Have you ever wondered about your future career prospects in science, especially in the biology field? Introducing an article featuring our esteemed A-level biology teacher, Liew Wai Yee! In this interview, Ms Liew gives students a better understanding and ideas to further their studies in the biology field.

  1. So, can you share your academic background and your field of expertise?

I graduated from Malaysia National University (UKM) with a Bachelor of Sciences and a Master of Genetics. My major was in Plant Genetics, involved in Gene Mapping by using genetic markers for Rice and Acacia plants.

2. Impressive! What sparked your interest in your field of expertise?

I remember at that time Genetics was the hot pancake in life science or biological study. It sounded so cool and fun! I was thinking of pursuing forensic science, probably because I was affected by the popular CSI movies at that time. 😊

3. Honestly, that’s understandable. What specific areas of genetics did you focus on during your studies? Can you tell us more?

I did genetics for fish (ikan kembung) during my last year thesis for Bachelor of Sciences. Later on, I joined a research team which was studying the important traits of paddy and gene mapping for Acacia plants. The sampling part was super fun. I went to the muddy paddy field to collect samples. My experience in the science lab which was conducting different experiments such as DNA extraction, Polymerase Chain Reaction, Electrophoresis, Fragment Analysis and many more were all harsh but very important to help me build my molecular skills and to grow as a dedicated character.

4. How interesting and inspiring! Can you explain an overview of the topic of genetics?

To me, Genetics is to explore the mystery of living lives. It also tells the story of a family, population, and species. Now with the technology available, genetics ease the diagnosis and the healing of diseases.

5. That’s very true. How long did you work in a research lab?

I worked as a research assistant for a couple of months after I graduated with a Bachelor of Science. I continued my research in Master of Sciences. I was a post-graduate for 3 years as well. As a research candidate, the lab was my main workstation.

6. What was it like working in a research laboratory? Can you describe any memorable experience you had?

I learnt a lot from my Master of Sciences and PhD seniors. From interesting skills to handling the machines and how to plan for research and troubleshooting, the learning process never ends. Working in a research lab prioritizes one’s discipline, dedication and persistence.

 7. Other than genetics, are there any majors that biology students can branch into? If so, can you give some examples?

There are many branches of biological study. Other than medical science, biotechnology and genetics, our country needs more people with expertise in taxonomy, ecology, botany, zoology and many more which are very important to help balance the development of our biodiversity and ecosystem.

8. Last question, what advice can you give students who want to further pursue biology or generally science in the future?

Science is the heart of human civilization and for a better life. Biology is to help us understand how our body and our surroundings work. If students are keen on learning this subject, please go ahead and enjoy the learning. I just feel that sometimes we might have thought too much about job prospects and other people’s opinions, which end up missing the real purpose of education or learning.

Thank you to Ms Liew Wai Yee for taking the time to do this interview. We hope that this article enlightens and fascinates students who are keen to further pursue in the biology field. Happy reading!
